A Glance At The Different Forms Of Cutting

By Whitaker Perrets

Do you ever notice a tombstone with many words on it and ask yourself how it was engraved? Have you ever been amazed by the spatial wonders of a sculpture and wondered how such a thing is possible? One of the most commonly used forms of sculpting and engraving is nothing less than laser cutting technology.

During the nineteenth century, one of the most common forms of sculpting, engraving, and crafting of many objects was the traditional welding technique, in which one would melt the raw materials, whether metal, iron, copper, or the like, and melt them until they became a fine liquid. Once that took place, the liquid would then be placed into receiving vessels where they would cool down and take their final form.

Engraving generally took place in the facility of a welder who would take the raw stone or metal and place it on a metal board. He would then take a chain-saw like machine and carve out letters and imprint them onto the metal or stone. This was the most common form of engraving.

There was, however, an even earlier method used to engrave stones and metals, and that was none other than the classic chiseling method. One would take the stones or large rock and chisel away at it with a metal or wooden pick little by little.

The chiseling method was used commonly for engraving tombstones as well as cornerstones of new foundations of buildings built in the early nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Today, a new form of engraving and cutting has risen to the playing field because of recent technological advances namely, the laser cutter. Laser technology developed very much with regards to eye and cosmetic surgery and has also been applied to the engraving and cutting of many metals and stones as well.

This laser technology has made its way to the world of sculpting, crafting, and engraving as well, creating one of the most easy to use forms of art creation available today.

In fact, many famous artists and sculptors around the world choose to use lasers as their tool of choice for precision art work. This is because lasers are far superior in precision to many of the other methods previously mentioned here. Even tombstones and plaque engravings are done today with laser cutting technology.
